"The most popular 50s comedy television show ever”

Abbott and Costello Show, The - Season 2

The Abbot and Costello Show is a half hour TV show that is loosely based on Abbot and Costello’s radio show. The main premise of the show is
that the two are unemployed bums who always struggle to pay the rent. Jerry Seinfeld cited that the main inspiration for creating Seinfeld came
from the Abbot and Costello show, although nothing like Seinfeld, the Abbot and Costello show caters to a distinguished sense of humour. Before
making this show in 1952, the pair had dabbled in radio and film, and were sick of the lousy scripts and cheap production values they had to deal
with and so turned to television. Now onto the show…
The Abbot and Costello Show is a mixture of clean humour, gags, (the show was created in the early 50s) and witty surrealism that creates some
really entertaining and funny television. Although not as wacky as some of the Marx Brothers’ work The Abbot and Costello show provides good
and wholesome entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. Seriously, pop this in and sit down with your kids, I am sure they will love the
slapstick nature of the fights and ‘accidents’., not to mention the incredulously childish nature of the characters.
The plots are meaningless, they are really just an excuse for comedy. The consistent thread through all 2 seasons of this is that they can’t pay
rent, when they get jobs, they completely ruin any chance of sticking at it, and around these situation chaos and comedy ensues. Without spoiling
the episodes you are guaranteed to see a lot of fights, gags, mess and insane ideas that always end up in destruction of property.
The Beyond Home Entertainment release of this show is excellent. Sadly most editions of this show floating around are poorly put together
releases. This set is a 5 disc set housed in DVD case with a cardboard slip, featuring 26 episodes from season two. The print is really clean and the
extra features including never before seen home movies of Lou Costello and his family, exclusive interviews with Lou Costello’s daughter and more,
make this a very fine release indeed.

William (Bud) Abbott and Lou Costello were an American comedy duo whose work in radio, film and television made them the most popular comedy team during the 1940’s. Beginning in 1952, their half- hour television series “The Abbott and Costello Show” was loosely based on the duo’s radio series and cast them as unemployed layabouts. In addition to Bud and Lou, there was the unforgettable supporting cast: Sid Fields, Hillary Brooke, Joe “Stinky” vBesser and Gordon “Mike the Cop” Jones.
You’ll be on Cloud 9 with this rare and riotous collection. This remarkable 5-disc box set contains all 26 episodes of the second - and final - season (1953-1954), complete and unedited, digitally remastered and looking better than ever.
