Wow! I haven’t seen a modern movie this good since..well ok Fido, but before that it must have at least been a year or so since I had seen a
modern film that I really really loved… Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a mockumentary horror where a film crew follow Leslie
Vernon (a to be serial killer) around whilst he plans on murdering a bunch of teens to attain revenge on the town that killed him…
Basically the film is sort of a metaphor, an intellectual look at the inner workings of the horror movie whilst staying very true and respectful towards
it. It’s one of the most original takes on a horror film I have ever seen, we’ve all seen 5 Blair Witch Project rip offs, 20 Evil Dead homages, but
this takes the horror genre as a whole and puts it as we have never really seen it before. Well kind of in Man Bites Dog, but as I mentioned before
it’s more of a metaphor and an exploration of the story structure of horror movies.
This film demands a lot of the viewer in terms of suspending your belief but man it’s just one cracker of a movie. I reckon it’s a film that will tear the
audience into two categories, those who love it and those who hate it. Fortunately I knew nothing about this film, I had read no reviews, no
synopsis or anything of the sort so it totally took me by surprise and I think this is really the best way to view it which is why I haven’t said too
much about the plot. If you go into this film unaware of what it is about, I think it works to the films advantage and will blow you away.
The acting in the film is amazing. Nathan Baesel who plays Leslie Vernon really brings the film to life, his childlike mannerisms and inappropriate
sense of humour made the film a real pleasure to watch. He is a character who is so sweetly natured that you genuinely end up rooting for the guy
and his cause.
This film is a must watch for all horror fans and a must own for anyone who likes entertaining black horror comedies. This isn’t a stupid annoying
hardy ha ha flick. The copy reviewed was just a preview disc, so I am not sure what features and extras accompany the retail disc, but that aside
it’s still worth buying.

You know legendary maniacs Jason Vhrhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Kruger, now meet Leslie Vernon, the next great psycho. This good-natured killing machine invites a documentary film crew to follow him as he reminisces with his murder mentor, evades his psychiatrist and meticulously plots his upcoming slaughter spree. But when the actual carnage begins, where do you draw the line between voyeuristic thrills and good old-fashioned slasher movie mayhem? A blend of horror and comedy that skewers, deconstructs and pays homage to all the iconic slasher films.
