Hands down probably THE classic horror film of the 80's! Everybody in the world knows of it, so why a review you may ask? Well for the .05% of
the population who have never seen it read on....

Five young adults go to a cabin in the woods for the weekend. Ash (Bruce Campbell), His girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), Ash's sister Sheryl (Ellen
Sandweiss), and another couple Scotty (Richard DeManincor) & Shelley (Theresa Tilly) start off by having a good time in the remote cabin, after a
few near accidents on the way there. Sitting around the dinner table eating & drinking, the trap door in the next room suddenly swings open! Ash
& Scotty go into the cellar to investigate, and find an old tape recorder and weird looking dagger, which they take back upstairs. Sitting around the
tape recorder it is discovered the owner of the cabin discovered a book about demon resurrections and proceeds to transcribe the whole thing on
tape, which awakens the demons in the forest!

Complete and utter mayhem ensures as one by one people are possessed by the demons, of which the only way to destroy them is complete
bodily dismemberment! Blood and limbs start flying everywhere as Ash does his best to battle the evil dead, in one the craziest movies ever made!

It is easy to see why this film is so revered. Fresh story, some incredibly inventive & bizarre camera angles, and a shit load of blood & gore! For a
feature debut, Director Sam Raimi really pulled out all stops to make this the freshest, bloodiest and downright insane movie made to that point in
time. Being made on a very low budget (about $300,000), some of the effects look really bad now, but thats part of its charm, back in a time where
you didn't need 50 billion dollars to make a film with state of the art CGI that sucks balls anyway!

The disc to go for is the R1
Book Of The Dead limted edition from Anchor Bay. With THX mastering and a DTS soundtrack, this is by far the cleanest
the film has ever looked. Which proves a bit of a problem, some may say. Its a bit too clean, the grain back on the old VHS really added to its
charm. 2 Audio commentaries (one with Sam Raimi & producer Robert Tapert, and one with Bruce) are Definately worth a listen, especially Bruces, 2
Doco's on the film, behind the scenes & trailers take care of the extras.

As for the book itself, well all i can say it is absolutely STUNNING! Not quite an exact replica but pretty damn cool all the same. Every household
should have 3 copies of this movie.
