The movie begins in Vietnam, where John Eastland (Robert Ginty) and his friend Michael Jefferson (Steve James) are imprisoned in a Vietnam POW
camp by the enemy, where they torture and behead the soldiers. In the heart of the dense jungle a group of soldiers witness a decapitation of a
fellow soldier with a machete, just before Jefferson manages to break loose and kill a number of the enemy and saves his friend John and a
number of other POWs. Several years later after returning from the Vietnam War, the streets of New York are now a war zone and infested by
drug dealers, pedophiles, pimps, prostitutes and street gang thugs who terrorize and prey on the weak and old within the community. Until
Jefferson is hospitalized and left permanently crippled due to a brutally beaten by a gang of street thugs named The Ghetto Ghouls, he decides he
owes it to Jefferson for saving his life in Vietnam, and begins to take the law in his own hands, by taking revenge on those who are responsible.
It's not long until the media gets wind of this mystery hero crusader, and nickname Eastland the "The Exterminator" who is cleaning up the
streets in New York.
I have to hand it to director James Glickenhaus for creating The Exterminator, cause within the first 10 minutes of this film you will get to see one
of the most gruesome and graphic decapitation scenes that definitely grabs your attention. For years I can still remember walking though the isles
of my local video store, looking at all the action videos and my eyes managed to always be glued to the cover of this film. And still to this very day
they are still using the original cover of a guy wearing a black motorbike helmet, holding a flame thrower. This is one thing I fucking love about films
from the 80's, the covers were somewhat plain but they manage to grab your attention far more than the shit you see now days on the video
store shelves.
The acting within this film does come off rather cheesy at times, but hey, show me any film from the 80's that doesn't have that feel to it. Robert
Ginty does a remarkable job with his character in this film, and the scene where he takes his frustrations out on a pedophile in a sleazy
whorehouse is a classic scene.
In the extra department, it’s sad to see such an awesome cult classic completely bare-boned, they didn't even add a chapter menu or even go as
far to add a friggin stills gallery for Christ sakes! Thanks Tango Entertainment for looking after us in the extra department, you cheap bastards…
The Exterminator: The Directors Cut is now digitally remastered on DVD. It's violent, sleazy, ruthless, and one of the most highly entertaining
action packed vigilante revenge movies ever to have been made. I highly recommend this film to all those who are diehard Death Wish fans, cause
you will definitely not be disappointed with this film.
"A one man army. A new kind of soldier in a new kind of war."
