The Gravedancers is basically about a trio of old college friends who are brought together at a friends funeral. Harris (Dominic Purcell), Kira (Josie
Maran) and Sid (Marcus Thomas) decide to have a few drinks at the local bar and reminisce about the good old days before getting back to their
normal lives. It’s getting late and Harris wants to head back home to his beloved wife Allison (Clare Kramer), but Sid comes up with a last minute
plan to drop by the local cemetery and have one last drink with their recently deceased friend before all going their separate ways. When the
drunken trio reach the cemetery, Sid finds a mysterious black sympathy card with a poem in it, they all begin to read the poem out loud while
dancing on the graves (as the card tells them to do), but Sid who needs to take a quick slash, whips it out and pisses all over the base of the
headstone. A few days past by and the three are suddenly being haunted by entities day and night. Harris and Allison begin to hear the
floorboards creaking, pipes shuttering, moans and laughter and the sound of the piano mysteriously playing by itself. They believe Kira is playing
tricks on them but unfortunately Kira has her own problems, a serial rapist violently rapes Kira every night leaving her black and bruised. Sid begins
to see fiery footsteps and things going a blaze at all hours of the morning. The three later meet up with a local paranormal specialist who believes
when the three foolish idiots read the poem, danced on and desecrated the graves of the dead, they somehow have summoned three murderous
spirit's from their resting grounds, which is why they are being haunted.
Mike Mendez brings us a supernatural suspenseful horror movie that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat until the very end. It has been
a while since I have enjoyed watching a ghostly spook fest horror film, ever since Steven Spielberg’s and directors Tobe Hooper’s eighties cult
classics Poltergeist, and Sidney J. Furie's The Entity, there hasn't been too many other films that have delivered the terrifying ghostly haunt effect
as those two films have until now. The Gravedancers is a creepy and frightening intense film to watch at this very day of age and without a doubt
will probably end up being a cult classic like Poltergeist and The Entity in twenty years time.
The acting from all the cast was awesome to watch, I am personally a huge fan of Dominic Purcell and every movie he is cast in, like Primeval
(2007), Blade: Trinity (2004) and also the number one blockbuster TV show Prison Break. Dominic Purcell always deliverers a solid performance
and hard edge entertainment with his characters. There is no doubt this guy will dominate the big screen with action films in the near future and
will probably end up being the next Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The special effects were a little weak from time to time, but not so much on the CGI side of things. I kind of wished that Mendez added a bit more
gore within the film, but it was good to see plenty of blood splatter throughout the film. I guess he was trying to keep the film as more of a scare
fest instead of gore fest, but I think a mixture of the two wouldn't have hurt the film. The two elements could of done it a little bit more justice,
but seeing a ghost rape, and an axe wielding psychopath floating around in the air was enough to get the film by "Hell Yeah".
The Gravedancers is going to be praised by those who love eighties style horror films, but the MTV generation will probably think this film is rather
cheesy and boring. But fuck them, I give this film the two thumbs up and I am definitely proud to brag about this film to any of my friends. So don't
worry about reading any other The Gravedancers reviews, just go ahead and order this film on DVD right now, before you change your mind and
order something that is in fact cheesy.
