Due to the recent Tarantino/Rodriguez film, the term “Grindhouse’’ has become the new catchphrase amongst the “uber-hip” youth of today.
Seeing an opportunity to “exploit” the market, a lot of DVD companies have begun releasing “Grindhouse” double & triple features to feed the ugly
beast of consumerism.
After Hours Cinema’s Grindhouse Trash Collection is three films spread over two discs. Disc one has an eight minute “Grindhouse history lesson”
from genre historian 42nd Street Pete and the first feature, Uta. Disc two has the other two features The Pimp Primer and Lusty Neighbors.
Uta (1968)
Uta is a 20-year-old hooker who loves her job, so she tells us as she lathers up in the tub. After admiring her own body for a while she finally gets
dressed and goes out to a club to meet one of her clients. At the club we witness a skinny hippy chick doing a slooooowww strip (it takes up the
first fifteen minutes of the film.) Afterwards Uta and her client go back to his place and have fully-clothed sex but he doesn’t pay her cause she can’
t suppress her laughter at his “horny pig noises”.
Later on at home Uta yearns for her “baby” who is away on a business trip. She lays around watching TV for awhile (she was afraid to go out
cause her horrorscope didn’t look too good), paints her nails, and then her “baby” telephones and she rolls around on the floor getting hot while
talking on the phone. The next day she has another date, this time with a “kinky” client - she dresses in leather and he rubs, sniffs & licks her
leather panties.
Uta soon receives news that her “baby” is going to be returning home sooner than expected. In preparation she puts on some fetish lingerie and
eyes herself in the mirror for a while. Finally her “big, sexy baby” is home and shock! horror! it’s a female! they get down to some dull lesbo
lovemaking and afterwards they decide to go for a romantic drive in the moonlight. Cut to the fantastic downbeat finale: in a scene tinted deep
red we see that Uta and her baby are found dead in a (bloodless) car crash, as the soundtrack and Uta’s narration play backwards a cop focuses
his torch on her lifeless face. The End. See kids? it doesn’t pay to be a hooker AND a lesbian!
Aside from the last two minutes I found this flick pretty dull, I mean NOTHING happens. It’s just basically Uta lounging around at home or having
boring sex. It’s shot in black & white without dialogue - the free jazz soundtrack gets turned down every now & then for Uta to narrate (usually
talking about herself and how “groovy” things are or how much she “digs hooking”.) Granted, the lighting and photography are top notch but that
and the downbeat ending are about the only things going for this one.
The Pimp Primer (1969)
Carl is a nasty pimp (with an even meaner pompadour) who lives with his girlfriend Gerry whom he is pimping out to pay the bills. With the hopes
of expanding his stable, he recruits local slut waitress Sherrie and brings her home to “test her out”. When Gerry arrives home from her “date”
with a drunk businessman she is pissed to see Carl in bed with Sherrie but he just gives her a couple of slaps, tears her dress off and forces her
into a lesbo coupling (which she ends up digging of course) with Sherrie in preparation for their performance at a swingers party the next night.
This lesbo scene dissolves into the swingers party where the two girls get the guests so riled up they engage in a full-on orgy.
The Pimp Primer is a typical piece of late 60’s/early 70’s soft-porno trash - loads of semi-graphic fucking shot on a five dollar budget with ultra-bad
dialog and acting in between. The introductory and concluding scenes feature a moralistic narrator proclaiming the evils of pimping & prostitution
over top of the fuck scenes. He mentions that Carl got busted a couple of times pimping and that Gerry OD’d after two suicide attempts, to try and
play this off as some kinda anti-pimp documentary or something!
On the whole, this is a semi-decent film, It overflows with a bunch of tedium-inducing sex scenes but it runs for under an hour and Carl the Pimp
was an amusing enough character to make it worthwhile for me. As an added bonus, in the final orgy scenes we get a glimpse of a young pre-
mustache John Holmes and Uschi Digard in an awful red wig.
Lusty Neighbours (1969)
Betty and Jim are young newlyweds who are already beginning to experience marriage troubles. Betty confides in her swinger neighbor Marcy,
who says Betty and her husband should come over for some nude sunbathing sometime with her and her husband. They do, but seeing as it’s
raining that day they decide to play a game of strip Chutes & Ladders instead, which Betty gets rather uptight over. After the “game” the swinging
couple invite the younger couple back that night for a few drinks with another couple… they accept.
When Betty and Jim arrive at the party they witness a slutty hippy chick groovin’ to the far-out tunes. Jim thinks this looks like his kinda party, Betty
looks disgusted. Later on after a few joints, slutty hippy chick gets naked and Jim decides to join her in a dance - Betty gets pissed and leaves the
room. Marcy follows to help console her but ends up seducing her into a bit of lesbo action. Meanwhile in the other room, slutty hippy chick is being
gangbanged by the rest of the men (including Betty’s husband) to the seizure-inducing flashes of a strobe light. Eventually Marcy’s husband comes
looking for her and Betty and ends up banging Betty much to her dismay. Then he starts to get really rough - he pins her to the pool table and
rapes her with a pool cue. Her husband tries to intervene but gets beat down by the other men for his trouble.
Lusty Neighbours is definitely the best flick of the bunch - it’s actually well made (well, kinda), there’s plenty of nudity, the sex scenes aren’t too
dull or overlong, the psychedelic strobe light party and bizarre up-skirt POV camera angles are a whole lotta fun and then there’s an ultra-
depressing ending to top it all off! Obviously, as with all three of these films the downer ending is meant to be some kinda moral “lesson” to the
free love generation, but it could almost be seen as an added bonus for the sleaze junkies in the audience… I mean a pool cue-rape scene and
violent beating for the finale? Fuck yeah!
The prints of The Pimp Primer and Lusty Neighbours are very scratched up and jumpy but Uta is in mint condition (due to coming straight from
director Nick Phillips personal collection.) The overall sound quality isn’t too bad but at times the dialog in Lusty Neighbours is all but inaudible. All
three films are very short - the average runtime is 45 to 50 minutes.
Overall The Grindhouse Trash Collection is an ok triple feature. None of the films are really must-sees unless you’re a 70’s sexploitation completist
but they’re still decent time-wasters if you’ve got nothing better to do than watch pasty, flabby, hairy flesh bump ‘n’ grind for eternity.
