In the late 70s to the mid 80s a new genre was introduced to us, known today as the Cannibal genre. Just before that we had the dead returning
back to life and feeding on the living, so why the hell can’t the living eat the living? But ever since then people have been left to think how the hell
can one human being eat another person ‘alive’ it’s simply cruel, sadistic, grotesque, vile and barbaric. Well, those little words sum up nicely Mark
Colegrove’s independent little movie
Isle of the Damned,  a nicely shot and very well written cannibal-comedy-spoof that pays homage to every
well known and loved cannibal movie ever made.

Isle of the Damned is about a group of explorers who are on a quest to find the lost treasure of Marco Polo. A private investigator named Jack
Steele (Larry Gamber) accompanied by his adopted son Billy (Peter Crates) is hired by a treasure hunter Harold Thompson (Patrician Rosa). The
group set sail on Harold’s personal yacht to find the lost treasure, which they believe is hidden on a small inhabited island just off the coast of
Argentina. Unfortunately for them the island they just set foot upon is infested by man-eating cannibals of the Yamma Yamma tribe who believe
that by eating another man alive you can gain his special powers. As they set off into the deep, dense jungle on their quest they soon find
themselves being surrounded, tracked down and brutally torn apart limb by limb by the blood thirsty savages. That’s until they are rescued by a
man named Alexis Kinkaid (Keith Tveit Langsdorf) a retired explorer who just happens to live on the island with the cannibals in a mansion with his
bodyguard Cain (Dustin Edwards) who has mastered the art of Kung Fu. As the cannibals draw closer the group they have to find a way off the
island before they are consumed by the hungry primitives.

The first time I watched the trailer I knew I had to get my hands on a copy of this movie. Yes it’s a low budget movie that is filled with bad wigs,
fake moes, plastic toy-looking guns and might look like it had the production value of a couple grand but what honestly sold me on the movie was
the trailers on YouTube where I got to witness a penis castration, fetus eating, intestine chomping, spear sodomizing, cannibals butt thumping and
the hilariously intended badly dubbed voice over’s. Ruggero Deodato’s
Cannibal Holocaust might be the mother of all Cannibal films but Mark
Colegrove’s
Isle of the Damned is definitely the mother of all cannibal-spoofs and probably will be for a very long time. I have never laughed and
been grossed out at the same time throughout a movie, and on the bonus side if you know your cannibal movies you will pick up on exactly which
cannibal movies that
Isle of the Damned pays homage to.

The gore factor is pretty high as you do get to see a lot of disembowelments, face peelings, intestine tug-of-war, rock bashing, and as mentioned
before penis castration scenes that will satisfy every and any gorehound. But one scene I have to mention that you didn’t get to was see the
penetration scene -  but just the thought of Billy getting his asshole torn open with a butcher knife because Harold has a thick dick kind of blew my
mind.

Mark Colegrove’s
Isle of the Damned is a nasty little piece of independent cinema that every Ruggero Deodato and Umberto Lenzi fan is going to
get a blast out of watching. What honestly amazes me is that this has not been picked up by a distribution company just yet and is currently only
sold through the Dire Wit Films website. For a movie that only cost the price of a MacDonald’s burger you honestly can’t go wrong with buying this
movie and after watching
Isle of the Damned you better prepare yourself for future titles that Dire Wit Films are going to release. And if you own
or are a part of a distribution company and love to support independent filmmakers then I highly recommend you request a screener as soon as
possible. If any of Dire Wit Films previous films are as hilarious and entertaining as
Isle of the Damned, then this small company is going to make a
huge name for itself in the very near future.

In Antonello Giallo's follow up to the notorious Pleasures of the Damned, private investigator Jack
Steele is hired by a mysterious treasure hunter to help find the lost treasure of Marco Polo. Along for
the trip is Jack's adopted son, Billy. Their search brings them to an island off the coast of Argentina...
and into the clutches of a primitive cannibal tribe, the Yamma Yamma. Alexis Kinkaid, a mysterious
recluse who has made his home on the island amongst the cannibals, may hold the key to unlocking
the island's secret... if they don't end up in the belly of a savage first!
Isle of the Damned, originally
released in Italy in 1980, brought Giallo under fire yet again by the Italian government, who were
outraged by the shocking and real scenes of primitive tribal rituals and cannibalism portrayed in the
film. The film has been long out of print, but is presented here in a digitally remastered form.
