Dad’s come home from the lab, and he’s brought something with him…

I can’t say I’m all that familiar with Hungarian horror, so this was a new experience for me. A cold
and bloodless (well, not literally, but you know what I mean) family it is we get introduced to, not
the most likeable bunch on the planet, little to sympathise with here. Mum, Dad and little Alex are
all disconnected, in the existentialist sense, often talking at cross-purposes.

When Dad decides to bring his work home with him, things just get worse. Little Alex disappears –
literally. His voice can still be heard, but he cannot be seen. Director Szasz has cleverly used the
horror genre to explore family relations, much like Jan Svankmajer did in Little Otek, only in a
grimmer fashion. As a metaphor for bad parenting and a crap marriage, this is bleak stuff. Is Alex
dead and his voice the conscience of the parents, or has he literally been made invisible?
Questions, questions. The director answers them, but I won’t. Watch it for yourselves and find
out.

This whole film is driven by its performances, which are top notch. The mother and especially the
father are totally credible, and evoke a real sympathy from their audience.

Basically, this is thirty minutes of film every short film maker should watch, and try to better.
Clever, subtle and well-crafted,
Now You See Me, Now You Don’t is a tour de force from director
Szasz. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for his next work, here’s hoping it’s a feature length.
