Like many other Adult Swim shows, Space Ghost Coast to Coast is a show that uses old Hanna
Barbera characters, this time from the show Space Ghost and Dino Boy which aired in the 60s.
Space Ghost Coast to Coast is essentially a parodist talk show, yet it neglects every formulaic
talk show quality. The main characters consist of the host- Space Ghost (real name Tad Ghostal)
SG is very egotistical and childlike, and often taunts, harasses or flat out ignores his guests.
Then there is Zorak, a praying mantis who constantly changes colour and hates Space Ghost, he
is extremely evil and is one of the most fun characters on the show. And finally, Moltar: the
show’s director and producer, while he doesn’t seem to suffer from too many personality
dysfunctions, his lack of enthusiasm for his job is evident.
Ok, that out of the way…every episode has a famous guest appearance. Apart from these guest
appearances there is always something going on in the SG headquarters be it characters from
other shows dropping in or Zorak planning SG’s downfall. Ok ok, so you want to know who the
guests are? Well on season two some of the guests are: Matt Groening, Ben Folds, Dave Grohl,
James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, Elvira, Method Man, Carrot Top, Penn and Teller.
Some of the episodes worth mentioning are - My personal favourite, the Sonny Sharrock tribute
episode: Sonny Sharrock was a hugely influential free jazz guitar player known for his original
saxophone-like approach to the guitar, his abrasive feedback assaults and inventive free improv
fuelled, amongst many other records and projects, the mighty Last Exit. Amongst Cartoon Network
fans though, Sonny is probably more recognized for the well-known Space Ghost theme song. In
this episode made shortly after Sharrock died of a sudden heart attack, Thurston Moore is
introduced as one Fred Cracklin and he kinda hangs around while Zorak and the band “plays” some
cacophonic free jazz, Sharrock-style for the whole duration of the show. Also included as a bonus
feature on the disc is clip of Thurston Moore + drummer banging out some improv’d Sharrock tunes.
Penn and Teller: I really enjoyed this interview, Space Ghost talks to Penn about magic and
proceeds to find out that Penn isn’t really a magician that he is basically a liar. This opens up a
whole can of worms for Space Ghost to poke fun at Penn and then Teller who doesn’t utter a
single word during the interview, which in turn bores Space Ghost who resorts to his childish
antics which in turn creates some funny television.
Carrot Top: This episode is completely horrible, I can’t stand Carrot Top, but you know this guy
puts himself out there, he gets ridiculed, everyone hates him and he has to go home and look at
himself in the mirror knowing that everyone thinks he is an incessantly annoying asshole who
needs to grow some facial hair in order to not look like a smarmy 13 year old kid who likes to
agitate people by constantly asking why?
The Matt Groening interview is the most coherent and uninterrupted and there is also a special
feature of the whole interview accompanying this set. I think by far this is the most interesting
and normal interview on the whole series. Still goofy, but you actually get to hear some answers
from the interviewee.
Overall this is a pretty sweet edition for fans of Space Ghost and Adult Swim shows in general.
Like other such releases as Sealab and Aquateen, Space Ghost also comes housed in a fold out
cardboard covered case with awesome pictures and episode menus. The special features consist
of: Commentaries on all episodes, original Andy Merrill pilot, Thurston Moore performance, 1993
pencil test, Matt Groening raw interview and Sonny Sharrock commemorative.
