Stupid Teenagers Must Die
The 80’s were awesome... greed, corruption, big hair, cocaine… but best of all, great
horror movies. Stupid Teenagers Must Die! pays homage to that most decadent of
decades by poking fun at the conventions of the 80’s horror film. While this idea hasn’t
always worked well in the past, as in the hugely uneven Student Bodies, I was willing to
give STMD! a chance.

A group of friends have decided to have a séance in a house where a very bad man
slaughtered his whole family, while it was meant to be nothing more than an evening of
scaring each other for  a bit for shits and giggles, the night turns deadly when the stupid
teenagers start dying. Naturally, the dead murderer’s spirit has come back from
beyond the grave, and he begins possessing the youths. Once he has one of the teens
in his control, he makes them attack the others.

STMD! is meant to look like a cheap 80s horror film, and they got the cheap part down.
Unfortunately, the film doesn’t really look like it was made in the 80’s at all. I think this is
because the film is shot on video, and any shot on video film from the 80’s would look
like Woodchipper Massacre or Shreck, not like the higher quality video of today. The
print is also a bit dark, but that may be fixed with a proper release.

Anyway, STMD! features your standard cast of 80’s characters. You get the nerd, the
tough guy, the bimbo, the freaky girl, the girls just there for gratuitous nudity, the
outsiders, and the token black dude (complete with Michael Jackson Thriller gear). The
outsiders are by far the funniest characters, though some of the others get very
amusing moments. A few good lines are hurt by the thespians, but overall the
performances are fine and suit the material.

The score’s overbearing, and the film takes awhile to get going, but it’s not a bad
homage to the beloved years of lore (the 80’s, I mean). I actually found myself more
interested in the film when it was played more straight, so like it was just a bad 80’s
horror flick, but some of the outright satire moments, like the gratuitous nudity, were
very funny.

For a low budget horror comedy, STMD! is quite entertaining, and fans of 80’s horror
should get a chuckle or two from it.
