On Christmas Eve a series of vicious murders occurred on the Verlaine Commune Ranch where a serial killer armed with a butcher knife in one hand
and a meat cleaver in the other, butchered a group of hippies and friends. When the police come busting through the doors, they are lucky to find
one remaining survivor, Verlaine's daughter Rebecca whom shortly after the attack went into a state of shock. When waking from her coma two
years later, Rebecca has no previous memories and cannot remember what exactly happened that following night. Rebecca was soon adopted by
her Uncle and Aunty and raise to believe that they were her actual parents.
That’s until 10 years later, Rebecca begins to attend college and falls deeply in love with one of the professor’s who teach at the college. Rebecca
begins to explain to her lover about the recent bad dreams she is starting to have and how a dead person claiming to be her father always trying
to reach out to her. Rebecca soon finds herself having visions of her “dead father” telling her to try and remember her past, and to go back home,
to help them find who murdered them. Rebecca begins to ask questions and digs deep into her past were she soon starts to unfold the horrible
memories that have been locked away in her head.
The Haunting of Rebecca Verlaine (2003) is directed by non other than Olaf Ittenbach, yes that’s right its the man who bought us the most
sickest, goriest and highest zombie body count even to this day Premutos: Lord of the Living Dead (1997) and not to mention other squeamish
classics such as Legion of the Dead (2001) an Beyond the Limits (2003). This time Ittenbach brings us a gory, sick and twisted supernatural flick
called The Haunting of Rebecca Verlaine which some of you might also know as titled Garden Of Love. Once again Ittenbach is able to shock his
audience with blood splatter carnage scenes which would even make Dario Argento clench his toes. Within the first 10 minutes of this film you will
witness some of the most brutal killings ever shot on screen. From the top of my head you will see scenes that contain; a women who just stepped
into the shower being viciously stabbed in the head and torso with a butcher knife, throats being slit open from ear to ear, a meat cleaver
smashed into some guys head and face while those who are soundly asleep in bed and awaken by a butcher knife being rammed into their chests.
Now that’s the way to start off a film, but most of all some of the scenes look so realistic it could be passed as a snuff film. For those who are very
familiar with Olaf Ittenbach’s previous work you will know what I am talking about.
After the beginning of the movie, it then starts to slowly and sadly die off on the gore/blood splatter factor and begins to go into more of a
supernatural drama. Although every time Rebecca’s father appears in the film, it did start to give the film that creepy, eerie feeling where it leaves
your mind thinking that you know something BRUTAL was going to happen sooner or later. And boy o boy, after Rebecca realizes what was going
on then the film finally picked up once again and so did the carnage. From left to right bodies were being decapitated, impaled, gutted, heads
smashed into steel wire fences, shotgun blasts to a peoples knees, torsos and heads, fuck I could keep going on and on. Gorehounds and splatter
freaks will definitely get their monies worth with this DVD.
The Haunting of Rebecca Verlaine the unrated version was just released by MTI Video on the 25th of March 2008 on DVD. Another fine release by
this company and I cant recommend this film enough for those who definitely like to see some of that icky red stuff being splattered all over the TV
scene, while the storyline slowly drops off from time to time but when you just least expect it, it blows up in your face.
I am not too sure what DVD Extras are presented on the original DVD, because I only had the chance to review a screener which only has the
movie itself. But according to the MTI Video website the DVD only contains a few trailers, and as for the aspect ratio is widescreen 16:9 with Dolby
Digital Surround Sound 5:1 in English. So sorry guys I have no clue about easter eggs, what the menu screens or DVD cover art looks like. Maybe
one day MTI Video might send us a retail version, so we can update this review for you. Other than that, I give this film 5.5 skulls out of 10.
