For the most part all I have heard is negative things about this relaunch of the classic ‘80s slasher saga. While I agree it’s yet another unnecessary remake of a classic film (to be honest just about ever remake is no matter how good or bad) I still found it to be a good horror film and anytime I can see Jason do his stuff on the big screen I will be there.
We all know by now that it is not so much a remake but a lose retelling of PART 2 and PART 3, PART 1 is taken care in a very brief credits sequence, with Nana Visitor as Pamela Voorhees I found it a shame she is offed so early as for the brief time she is on screen she made a interesting Mrs. Voorhees, this all happens in 1980 after young Jason take mum's head and machete and hides out in the woods for 30 years until a group of teens head his way for camping, sex and NIGHTRANGER music, 2 of there number have a get rich quick idea of ripping off weed to make some cash. That night around the campfire we get the story of Jason and his mad mum, after story time BF and nice girl head off and find CAMP CRYSTAL LAKE, needles to say they have a nasty run in with our old friend Jason.
Cut to 6 weeks latter an arsehole rich boy and his friends head up to the lake for a weekend of fun times and along the way the meet up with Clay (Jared Padalecki - Supernatural) who is looking for his sister, arsehole Trent (Travis Van Winkle - Left in Darkness) does not like Clay form the get go but his GF Jenna (Danielle Panabaker - Shark) takes a shine to him, as Trent and his friends Chelsea (Willa Ford - Impulse), Nolan (Ryan Hansen - Veronica Mars), Chewie (Aaron Yoo - Disturbia), Lawrence (Arlen Escarpeta - We Are Marshall) and Bree (Julianna Guill - One Tree Hill) settle in at the cabin, Jenna decides to help Clay look for his sister Jason warms up with a redneck and then sets his sights on the party crew and I think you can guess the rest.
I have to agree with zer0hal0 and what he said about the release date delay of films, sometimes it can be up to a year before we get a film after it opened in the US, I mean how long was House of a 1000 Corpses on DVD in the US before it hit over here?, no wonder people download movies rant over.
Derek Mears did a great job as Jason Voorhees, he had a tough mask to fill as a lot of fans will not see anybody as Jason other than Kane Hodder, while Kane is the best Jason in my book Derek put his own spin on the horror icon to me this Jason had a nasty streak a couple of victims make sure the suffer a slow and painful death.
A lot of people have criticized the kills for not being as creative as the deaths in the early films, but I found them to be nasty and to the point, I think director Marcus Nispel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) was going for a more raw and dirty feel with the violence and speaking of Marcus Nisple got to give him points for having the balls to tackle another remake of a classic, I think he is a good director who does a good job but I would like to see him try his hand at an original horror movie.
In the end I had a great time watching this, for sure the film has its flaws (but lets be honest the original Friday the 13th films had the fair share of flaws also) as a huge Friday the 13th fan I would tell all my fellow fans to check it out at least once but I think it will be the kind of film that will grow on you, there are so many nods to the other Friday's I think you will pick up a few each time you watch, so forget all the negative things about this films and check it out yourself you may love you may hate but see it first before you judge it.
